SIMMONS unveils new 'State of the Art' Wheel Boring Machine

Albany, New York - October 8, 2009

Simmons Machine Tool Corporation (www.smtgroup.com) has introduced a new wheel machining center, WMC-200/400, utilized to finish machine railway wheels in preparation for wheel set mounting/assembly.  The machine can be utilized within high production wheel set assembly lines or as a "stand-alone" machine for flexible applications requiring a wide range of wheel machining processes.

The Simmons WMC-200/400 offers the company's highly precise electronic boring bar which is guided by a vertical ram utilizing high stiffness solid type box ways. Both the vertical ram and optionally available horizontal ram obtain feed motion via an electric servo/ball screw system. The optional horizontal ram utilizes heavy duty anti-friction guideways. Table speeds have been increased by over 70% and when combined with the latest cutting insert technology results in significantly higher production rates. Overall machine stiffness has been improved over 40% from prior machine models while the chucking system has been reduced in complexity from 5 jaws to 3 jaws yet clamping force has been increased by nearly 70%. Simmons is manufacturing the WMC-200/400 at its Albany plant and installing the new machine for several customers in the US, Asia and West Africa. Simmons President, David William Davis, says "By using precision engineering machine design principles, we have brought to market the most accurate, thermally stable finish boring machine possible. Cost to Performance ratio was key in order to entice customers to avoid rebuilding existing machines and yet offer improved maintainability, safety and user friendliness".

Simmons Machine Tool Corporation (www.smtgroup.com) manufactures machines dedicated to railway wheelset maintenance or production applications. The company is part of the NSH Group which is comprised of
