The 600 ton demount press is designed for the disassembly of wheels from freight wheel sets. The press has dual press heads and is complete with an overhead crane system to position the wheel set in a fixed abutment between the press heads. The press is equipped with tooling required to process freight wheel sets with axle range of 127.0 mm bearing journal diameter x 228.5 mm journal length to 177.8 bearing journal diameter x 228.5 mm journal length with 676.2 mm to 913.4 mm diameter wheels. Included, as integral part of the press complex is an automated bearing journal adapter, which accommodates two types of axles. The operator must select from the operators’ panel the suitable adapter for the axle to be demounted. The press also includes an automated crane system that loads the wheelset into the press and removes the demounted wheels and axle and places them into the material handling system at the end of each demount cycle.
